Description

The BMW Art Cars project was born by inviting an artist to create a canvas on an automobile. PUMA translated those masterpieces into a collection including footwear, apparel and accessories. In the 1970s, BMW and French auctioneer and race car driver Hervé Poulain commissioned Calder to paint a design on a BMW 3.0 CSL to be raced at Les 24 Heures du Mans. The use of differing colours with in the individual elements of the car’s structure added to the illusion of movement. As with his mobiles and stabiles, Calder's BMW Art Car speaks to his interest in the social activation of sculpture and the dynamic power of gesture and colour. The legendary collaboration set in motion an entire BMW Art Car Collection program, a high-profile crossover with the art world.
